Hey, Julie!
I just discovered your excellent show via a segment aired recently on The Splendid Table which is also quite awesome. I listened to all but one of the podcasts and was all :( to see there weren't any more so I raced to the donation page. Seriously, the show's got me inspired. To do what? I don't really know at this point. But there are enough dormant ideas and projects laying around I'm sure I'll find something to revive. Thanks for DDIY and keep up the good work! I'm looking forward to future episodes!

Mark

Claudia,
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. All I can say is that to me, DIY is inherently creative but also practical and I believe this combination is what makes it revolutionary.

Enthralling show--caught the last part of Black Apple's segment, but the dog house story compelled me to look on line--what a beauty. Meanwhile the knitted farm was presented--also looked at that--wonderful. But then, the segment on butchery started. I was revolting and I turned the radio off. Many things can be DIY, but in my opinion it should entail creativity. Butchering an animal is not creative, rather a skill to learn. As vegetarian and animal rights advocate I found this segment offensive and question its validity on your show.

Don't change it - I love the intro song! Very impressed with the article about end of life rituals. I am learning so much from your show. Keep up the creative work.
Thank you!

Hi,

Great show! I just heard your story on the Portland collective housing. I wanted to mention another collective housing organization that you might also be interested in checking out-

The OHSU Co-op is a house just a couple blocks from the OHSU Hospital. While not directly affiliated (thankfully) with OHSU, it has non-profit status because it is one of the only (if not the only) organization providing housing for OHSU students. The house has 23 bedrooms and is populated and run entirely by medical, dental, nursing, and research students. I don't know how long it's been going, but I've found financial records dating back to the 1970s. Check it out at http://www.ohsucoop.com

Cheers-

Dan Cleary

The show is overall well done with good productions values, but the intro song is truly terrible. Please consider a different tune for the next season.

I saw the write-up in Sunset Magazine. Very nice!

I wondered if you have heard of DIY Studio in Salem? (http://www.diystudio.net/)

Hooray for all DIY champions!

Lynne, I'm not sure what you're looking for from me, but it sounds like an interesting idea. Have fun!

Lynne Lehmer - Sun, Jan 16th 8:48am
Dear Julie,
I read about your DestinationDIY website in Sunset magazine. Fantastic idea. I wanted to ask you a question. A friend of mine who is Chinese and I will be starting to teach/coach Chinese and English online via Skype. She lives in China and I live in northern Indiana, USA (but born on the west coast in the state south of yours). We are just in the very beginnings of this. Do you have any ideas or comments?

Julie Sabatier, host/producer - Sat, Dec 4th 4:02pm
Kristina,
Thanks so much for your comment. We actually did a whole episode on education, back when the show was a 1/2 hour long and we talked to an unschooler in that show. You can listen to it here: http://www.destinationdiy.org/episodes/episode21.html
If we revisit the topic in future, I'll be sure to get in touch.
Julie

Hello DIY people!

I adore the show and it's concept. I think it's just what people today need to hear and take part in.

I was wondering if you had ever or would ever consider doing a show on DIY education? My children were educated for several years using an approach called "unschooling", and we have become advocates for the lifestyle.

Unschooling is a specific type of home education that focuses on the learner having the control. Unschoolers feel that learning is a natural result of living, and that children should be in charge of any learning direction as opposed to a teacher, adult, or outside influence imposing a structure upon them.

The kids are 17 and 19 today, and have rented an apartment. We still consider ourselves an unschooling family and we do our best to spread the word about this exciting educational approach.

I would really love to take part in a show about this, and I feel it would fit well into the DIY world.

Peace to you,
Kristina and kids!

I absolutely love this program - each week I learn a little bit more about what is possible to create on one's own, and am always inspired.

However, listening this afternoon, I was appalled to hear about the woman who charges $400 for the creation of a ritual. That's completely ridiculous, and not very DIY. I'm a doctor and ethically, I would never charge a patient that much for my services. How disgusting. Talk about money being the bottom line.

Molly,
Thanks for the comment. Another producer worked on the piece about the Eugene Storefront Art Project, but I will ask her to look into an update on the hotel building so we can post something.

Molly Weinstein - Sat, Nov 27th 12:45pm
I am listening to your broadcast 11/28 when you had several Oregon segments, one on the Eugene Project to put Art in windows of vacant /unused buildings. One you mentioned was the Eugene Hotel which NOW is an inhabited senior residence which has lots of murals and other art. I think you should have had a postscript to add current information to your stories. Thanks for allowing me to comment.

I was on a road trip from Cali back to my home in Seattle and I caught the tail end of one of your shows about marijuana and whether or not it should be legalized, I really appreciated that the show presented all sides of the debate and remained neutral through out the segment. I love you guys!

mallie - Wed, Aug 25th 8:37pm
Just caught the show for the first time...where've I been?! Awesome!

Erik - Sat, Aug 21st 12:52pm
Cool show! I came to the site to find links to some of the photographers that I heard about on the air, but after searching and searching, I can't find any mention of them. Bummer! I wish you had the links that you mentioned.

Julie, Your mom and I are sitting on the bed in my guest room and having a slumber party. I'm checking out your web site so I can build one of my own that is almost as cool.

Did you hear Colin screaming your name earlier?

Love you,
Ginnie

Keep up the good work - Wed, Feb 25th 6:11am
Hey,

I am a winemaker in the south of France working on setting up a program that lets wine drinkers visit and make their own wine using our vines and winery. I heard Julie doing an interview with some DIY garage wine makers and followed that to Destination DIY.

Keep up the good work, everybody. It's awesome to promote the DIY culture that's so ample in your neck of the woods. Hopefully it'll be world wide one day like it was pre-industrial.

Julie, great show today. I passed the link on to a few of my mom friends in KC and Chicago and we have enjoyed the resulting discussion. I think *I* want to go to free school (at 41). It does make me want to hear an opposing viewpoint, though -- wondering about people that tried free/unschooling and found it a bad fit for themselves or their children. Intriguing.

Jess Prichard - Sat, Oct 6th 12:09am
Hi. It's Ryan's roomate Jess. Could I have your email address so I can put the PR people for my show about the 80's AIDS epidemic in the gay population, "As Is," in contact with you? Just Out did a wonderful story on us when I did "The Laramie Project" I did at Portland Actors Conservatory that served both the piece and the paper. Cheers

JULIE! I love the new website. I am thrilled that I can easily stream all of the shows. I have barely made a dent but I just listened to the one on Dignity Village! What a great idea to bring light to their community! I didn't even realize something like that existed here in pdx and it was interesting to hear all the different views + opinions!
